Palau doesn't look much like a "hotbed of strife and violence," as it was often called, in this photo. Back then, much of Micronesia was a fascinating combination of conflict and serenity.

This is Micronesia as it was back when I lived there between 1978 and 1984. Things are still pretty much the same today, although Truk is now called Chuuk and Ponape is now called Pohnpei.

Just another crummy day in paradise....
